about

Coltan test for Congolian ghosts is the result of a collaboration with the artist Sammy Baloji during his 2018 exhibition in Rennes 2 University

Sammy Baloji gave some sound archives as a material to use and appropriate his work on Congo's culture and colonial history.
As a result, the artist narrative was merged with Makinist's electronic hyperstition.
The samples from traditional Congolian music were politicized with an exploration of issues concerning the mining of coltan used to make electronic devices. Some of the world's biggest coltan mines are in Congo. Yet, they are yet exploited by foreign countries in a neocolonialist fashion, producing conflicts and use of child labor.

The concept album is an exploration of a mine, using the words and language of old miners blend with Belgium vocabulary. This hauntological project is also focusing on using the uncanny as a way to assess this troubled history.
